A mom who supports her children through sex work in Kenya describes her situation and how she would like to help other women. There is a great need to support this mom and many others like her. Contact us if you are interested in supporting programs for moms in sex work.

 

“A peer educator reports 22 deaths of FSW from cervical cancer in just 5 months in 2019.” Mombasa, Kenya

While most of the focus on the health of FSW is on HIV, many FSW have other serious, and fatal, health problems. This peer educator reports 22 deaths of FSW from cervical cancer between January 1 and mid-May 2019: in less than 5 months there were 22 deaths of FSW in just this one community in Mombasa. These deaths are preventable. Join us in the effort to prevent cervical cancer among FSW.

There is a large focus on preventing HIV among sex workers. This is warranted. But the majority of sex workers also become pregnant do not have adequate antenatal care. This peer educator shares her perspectives on these issues.

Dr. Leon, a physician with PASCO, our partner in Kinshasa, reports there is a lack of services for pregnant women in sex work and that this has fatal consequences: one pregnant FSW who was bleeding did not have the money for care and died. Her death is a tragedy and preventable. We must work together to prevent more maternal deaths among FSW.

Our colleague from Kenya, Phelister Abdalla, National Coordinator of the Kenya Sex Workers Alliance, discusses the situation of female sex workers [FSW] who are mothers in Kenya. As she notes, the majority of FSW in Kenya are mothers and many become pregnant but experience barriers to antenatal care, including stigma and discrimination, increasing their risk of death during pregnancy and childbirth.

Two mothers who support their children through sex work in Nairobi volunteered to share what happens to mothers who are sex workers and their children. They shared their experiences while participating in a focus group discussion about these issues that was convened in Nairobi in November 2015.
